For an assignment during a school module Illustration for Designers, my lecturer Steve Lawler sent us to the now-almost-forgotten/defunct Haw Par Villa to gather visual references. The moment I stepped inside the run down, forgotten park, the idea for this piece hit me. It felt like the absurd sculptures had been trapped in humid limbo for a long time – like that movie Night at the Museum – and just needed to be injected with new life in order to burst out of confinement, and enjoy the freedom that they have long deserved.
Hawpar Cosmic Fightback! was featured as part of NOISE Singapore, an initiative of the National Arts Council that showcases work by local young artists.
NOISE Singapore also collaborated with Degree, an online store by DDB Worldwide that aims to be a launchpad for great ideas and design – and you can buy Hawpar Cosmic Fightback! on Degree. The print measures 840mm by 335mm, in full glorious colour.
Here’s something that’s more personal: Hawpar Cosmic Kicks! Converse in the US has a service to print your designs or photos onto their sneakers, which turned out awesome.
And just for fun, here are some of the photos I took around the park itself during that research trip, and a bunch of initial sketches.
